This circuit of some 40 miles and 11,000 feet of ascent was inspired by The Joss Naylor Lakeland Challenge.  The aim was to encourage runners of 50 years old or more to continue to participate in long-distance mountain challenges - hence the name!  It was the first in a sequence of six challenging runs (five in the UK and one in The Canary Islands) which formed the Over the Hill Series.  The series ran from 2002 to 2012 before being discontinued.  The OTH Round, along with all the others, now operates on an informal basis without time limits, registrations or certificates and is open to all age groups. 

Based on Sedbergh the round combines the trio of trig points on Baugh Fell, Great Shunner Fell and Wild Boar Fell with the only four trig pillars in the Howgill Fells. Much of the route is across wild, pathless terrain while the latter stages take full advantage of the steep open fells for which the Howgills are renowned.  The OTH Round was devised by Tony Wimbush and first completed in 2002, along with Colin Brooke, in a time of 11 hours 6 minutes.


Starting and finishing at Sedbergh church (GR 659 501) the circuit links together the 7 trig pillars listed below.  It is recommended that your route takes in Flust (GR 770 943), High Dyke (GR 803 943) and Stonely Gill (GR 712 003) but these are optional provided rights-of-way and Access Land are adhered to. The circuit may be undertaken in either direction or from an alternative start point.
