ULTRA-DISTANCE CHALLENGES

The Dales Skyline                                                                                                                        UK Ultras

This is a traverse of the ten peaks which form the southern Dales skyline as viewed from the Bowland Fells.  It involves some 36 miles and 11000 feet of ascent.  Devised by Duncan Elliot of Bowland Fellrunners, it was first completed by Duncan along with club mate Andy Crook in April 2010. Basically it is the Yorkshire Three Peaks sandwiched by Calf Top, Crag Hill and Green Hill to the north-west and Fountains Fell and three minor trigs, in contrasting, less frequented terrain, to the south-east.  Readily done in a day it makes an excellent Dales companion to the Cumbrian Traverse. The cafe or shop at Horton provides a convenient midway stop while the start near Kirkby Lonsdale is just a 30 minute trip up the A65 from the finish at Settle.

It is intended as an informal outing without time limits, rules or registrations, although Duncan would be pleased to hear of any successful completions (see below).

Route

The start is at Barbon church (SD 630 824), 3 miles north of Kirkby Lonsdale, and the finish is at Settle Market Cross (SD 819 636).  The 10 summits listed below must be visited, going via the Hill Inn and Horton-in- Ribblesdale. Use OS Explorer Map OL2 Yorkshire Dales - South and West areas.
